We are a Welcoming Congregation

UU congregations extend a warm welcome to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, families, and communities. We work to promote acceptance, inclusion, understanding, and equity for LGBTQ persons of all ages, abilities, colors, and genders, both within our denomination and in society at large. We are committed to protecting the civil and legal rights of LGBTQ people and families across the country.

Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship was involved in this work early on and became the third Welcoming Congregation in Canada back in 1995. In 2011 it was clear that a long time had passed since the Welcoming Congregation work was done and that it was time to revisit the program and move forward.

A number of members and friends of LUF gathered in the fall of 2011 to work through a series of eight Welcoming Congregation workshops. There was a much sharing and exploration of LGBT issues, looking at common elements of oppression, gender socialization and homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, religion and homosexuality, bisexuality and transgender identity. Participants found it very rewarding, and all agreed that LUF should move to renew its status as a Welcoming Congregation. This was subsequently done at the Annual General Meeting in June 2012.
