An open letter to the person, or persons, who visited us in the middle of the night.

Date: January 10, 2020

Thank you for leaving everything that we need in order to continue to operate.
The cash that you took was being donated to feed the hungry, we hope that it did.
You remind us that stuff is just stuff.
You remind us that we have procrastinated on replacing our old inefficient windows for too long.

We hope that wherever you are, you also find shelter from the storm.
We hope that you’re warm, and fed, with a roof over your head.
We wish you good health.

We don’t know anything about you, and we are concerned about you.
We don’t know your name, your gender, your race, or your age.
These are traits that shouldn’t matter anyway.

We know that your needs are great.
We know that you are resourceful, strong, limber, and agile.
We know that we underestimate you, you are very determined.

We want to deter theft, but we don’t want to deter you.
You have many attributes, we hope you find a way to put those skills to better use.
You have visited us twice in the middle of the night.
If circumstances were different, perhaps you would be visiting us on a Sunday morning.
Maybe someday that will happen, we’ll have the coffee on.
