Empty Bowls, Caring Hearts

Empty Bowls/Caring Hearts began in 2000 and is still going strong. This event is both a fundraiser and a community awareness builder. All proceeds are shared between Thunder Bay Food Bank and Shelter House. Over $300,000 has been raised over the years.

The Empty Bowls/Caring Hearts Dinner Event takes place on the third Sunday in October at the Moose Hall on 434 Fort William Road in Thunder Bay.  In 2020 and 2021 a COVID modified version of the event has taken place with hopes to resume a normal event in 2022.

Although the money raised is sorely needed, the focus of this event is on:

  • bringing young and old together for a simple communal meal, prepared and served by Thunder Bay’s finest chefs , restaurants and businesses
  • choosing a handcrafted ceramic bowl take home and serve as a reminder of the purpose of the event and the need in our community.
  • increasing our awareness about people who struggle to feed themselves and their families.

Lakehead Unitarian Fellowship has been a stalwart sponsor of this event. Almost every member and friend of LUF has been involved with Empty Bowls at one time or another, be that as a guest at the meal or doing the dishes, helping collect money at Tag Days, and preparing the hall. Every bit counts. Please lend your support.  It is our sincerest wish that hunger and food insecurity should no longer plague our community and be eradicated from society. Visit our website and check us out on Facebook.
